BIO199-Spring2017-Syllabus.doc

We started this site as a interactive site for middle school and high school students in the state of Kentucky (USA) to interact with undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Kentucky as an science outreaching activity.

The goal is to have on line multimedia communication and dialogue of scientific research with middle & high school science teachers as well as 6-12 grade students. This will help with presentations and discussion skills with students working on science projects. One will also learn how to use multimedia to discuss science online. We will keep a blog on the science communications of the various research projects. We hope to help not only the students with their research but that university students will gain valuable research experiences in working with the students and helping them to conduct scientific investigations.

Dialogue with 6-12 middle & high school students and their respective science teachers will occur througout the semester. This initiative is to develop effective scientific critical thinking, analysis, presentation, and discussion skills for middle and high school students and university science majors by exploring various topics across the science and health science disciplines. UK undergraduates work in interdisciplinary pairs mentoring 5 to 6 middle/high school students as a mini-class; dialogue is weekly via blog and/or video streams. The online Acclaim account allows all participants to annotate posted audio and video clips posted by the generated via mini- classes promoting easy and effective feedback, discussions, and collaboration.

Some classes are using fruit flies to address human diseases.
