Founded more than 37 years ago, the Department of Statistics at the University of Kentucky is proud of its distinguished record of research, teaching, and service. Recognition of its faculty's contributions to the general enterprise of statistics, probability, and interdisciplinary research is evidenced not only by the publications and grant activity of its members but also by the numerous citations of its members' works. The faculty have made fundamental contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge and have played an extended role in this advancement through the achievements of the Department's graduates.

The Department has awarded an average of 8 Master's and 5 Ph.D. degrees per year. Alumni with Master's and Ph.D. degrees have had very successful careers in industry and academia. Several graduates hold faculty positions in statistics or industrial engineering/operations research departments at research-oriented universities, including Cornell University, Duke University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Purdue University, D.C. Davis, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, etc. Others have had distinguished careers in industry and now hold senior leadership positions in major corporations such as Searle, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Abbott, McNeil, etc. Anecdotal evidence from graduates indicates a high degree of satisfaction with their education and, while the credit for their successes goes to them, we feel that their years at the University of Kentucky helped launch their careers.

The Department of Statistics has also contributed to the education of students across the University through its graduate and undergraduate service courses, its participation in the Mathematical Sciences undergraduate major, and its minor in Statistics

The Department of Statistics is enthusiastic about its recent accomplishments and is poised to help the University of Kentucky achieve its goal of becoming a top-ranked research university.
