Slovak Studies Association Newsletter

General Information

The SSA publishes a biannual newsletter containing information and articles in the area of Slovak studies. The newsletter is automatically sent to members of the Slovak Studies Association as a membership benefit. (If you are interested in becoming a member of the SSA, see the membership section of this website.)

Submissions

All members are encouraged to submit information and articles for possible publication in the SSA Newsletter. Newsletter content is generally restricted to information of an academic/scholarly nature in accordance with the stated purpose of the SSA: "to promote interdisciplinary scholarly research, publication, and teaching related to the Slovak experience the world over, to help scholars interested in Slovak studies be in contact, to sponsor panels and sessions on Slovak themes at scholarly conferences, to act as a clearinghouse for information concerning Slovak studies".

An "Information Submission Form" is sent out to all members two months prior to the appearance of each newsletter issue in order to encourage submission of materials for publication. Members may submit information throughout the year, but information that is intended for publication in a specific newsletter issue must be submitted one month before the publication date of that issue (approximately May 01 for the Spring-Summer issue and November 15 for the Fall-Winter issue).

The Information Submission Form is intended for use in submitting short news items. If you are interested in submitting a complete article, or for further information on submitting other types of material to the SSA Newsletter, contact the SSA Newsletter Editor directly [note from the Webmaster: the position of SSA Newsletter Editor is currently vacant].

Please consult the Slovak Studies Association Newsletter Editorial Policies” before submitting any materials.

Publication History and Schedule

Publication of the SSA Newsletter began in 1977, the year the Slovak Studies Association was founded. Roman numerals were used to indicate volume numbers 1-4, and the current Arabic numeral notation began with Volume 5 in 1981. Volumes 2-14 appeared on an calendar-year schedule, i.e., issue No. 1 was printed early in the year and issue No. 2 late in that same year. Beginning with Volume 15 (1991), the newsletter was published on an irregular schedule, gradually falling into an academic-year pattern, i.e., issue No. 1 appearing in the fall/winter of one year and issue No. 2 appearing the following spring/summer. With volume 24 (2001), the newsletter returned to its original calendar-year schedule. Issue No. 1 (Spring-Summer) now appears in May/June, and issue No. 2 (Fall-Winter) appears in November/December of the same year.

Back issues of the SSA Newsletter prior to Volume 24 (2001) are generally not available at this time. It is planned that Vol. 24 and subsequent volumes will be archived in electronic format as PDF files. Three issues (24.1, 28.1, and 29.1-2) have been made available here on a trial basis. If this process of PDF archiving is adopted, it is anticipated that electronically archived issues will be made available in the year following their publication and will be linked through the list of volumes and issues presented below.
