Simple Instructions

If you are unfamiliar with the workings of an electronic discussion list, please read the long version of these instructions below. If you would like further information concerning specifically the ‘ssa’ discussion list, contact Mark Lauersdorf, SSA Webmaster, by e-mail at: lauersdorf@uky.edu, or by regular mail at: Department of Modern and Classical Languages, 1055 Patterson Office Tower, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0027, USA. The ‘ssa’ discussion list is hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.

Long Version (for those unfamiliar with discussion lists)

An electronic discussion list is an internet service that is designed to facilitate communication among a group of individuals who share common interests. An individual becomes a “member” of a discussion list by “subscribing” to the list (like subscribing to a magazine or newspaper). Once you have subscribed and are a member of the discussion list, you automatically receive all messages that are sent for discussion by other subscribed members, and you can send messages for discussion which will automatically be received by all other subscribers.

The ‘ssa’ discussion list has been established to serve the members of the Slovak Studies Association as a means of sharing questions and information related to the field of Slovak studies. Since the ‘ssa’ list is intended to serve specifically the members of the Slovak Studies Association, only members in good standing of the Association will be able to send and reeceive messages for discussion.

A. In order to participate in the ‘ssa’ electronic discussion list, you must subscribe to the ‘ssa’ list as follows:

  1. address an e-mail message to: listserv@lsv.uky.edu

  2. in the body of the e-mail message type the following:

    subscribe ssa Firstname Lastname
[Type your actual first and last names, not the words ‘Firstname’ ‘Lastname’.]

  3. do not include anything in the “subject” line of the message

  4. send this e-mail message

In order for this to work correctly, you must send this subscription message from the e-mail account that you will be using to participate in the ‘ssa’ discussion list. The computer that manages the ‘ssa’ list will respond to your “subscribe” request with messages confirming the completion of the request

Once you have subscribed and you have been verified as a Slovak Studies Association member in good standing, you will be granted “posting privileges” on the ‘ssa’ discussion list, i.e., you will be able to send messages to the list to be received by all other subscribers. (Note that the granting of posting privileges may take a day or two since this is done manually.)

B. In order to send a message for discussion, do the following:

  1. address an e-mail message to: ssa@lsv.uky.edu
[NOTE that this is different from the subscription address listed above!]

  2. type your own address in the “cc” line if you want to be sure to receive a copy of your message
[you should, however, automatically receive copies of messages that you send to the list]

  3. type the subject of your message in the “subject” line
[this is a courtesy to other subscribers that allows them to immediately identify the topic of discussion]

  4. type your message and send

C. If you wish to cancel your membership in the ‘ssa’ discussion list, you must unsubscribe from the ‘ssa’ list as follows:

  1. address an e-mail message to: listserv@lsv.uky.edu

  2. in the body of the e-mail message type the following:

    unsubscribe ssa

  3. do not include anything in the “subject” line of the message

  4. send this e-mail message

In order to be able to “unsubscribe” successfully, you must send this message from the same e-mail account that you used to subscribe to the ‘ssa’ discussion list. The computer that manages the ‘ssa’ list will respond to your “unsubscribe” request with messages confirming the completion of the request

If you have any questions about the ‘ssa’ electronic discussion list, contact the list owner, Mark Lauersdorf, at <lauersdorf@uky.edu>.
