COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:
This course is a continuation of JPN 102. The content covered and skills mastered in that course are requisite to continue in JPN 201. The goal of this course is to help students to move beyond (as well as reinforce) the level of beginners' Japanese and master intermediate Japanese. In doing so, you will continue your progress in contemporary Japanese through a systematic, communicative, four-skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) approach.

The course intends to provide students as many opportunities as possible to practice oral (both listening and speaking) skills in class. Because of time constraints, however, these instructors strongly recommend, although do not require, that students participate in, and take advantage of, Japanese conversation programs on campus, the facilities of the language lab, and the material found on the McGraw-Hill website.

You will be evaluated regularly. You do not need to be perfect every time you are called on, but you must demonstrate that you have prepared the day's material and reviewed the last class' material. Reading, doing crossword puzzles, or sleeping in class (for example) will not help your grade. Further, because absence counts against you, attending class unprepared is better than not attending at all.

Illegible homework will be returned ungraded. Be especially careful when you write in Japanese. All homework is due at the beginning of class.

The course schedule will be flexible enough to permit extra time spent on difficult sections, depending on your learning needs. Do not hesitate to share concerns or questions regarding the course materials and class instruction with your instructor and classmates.

This course will demand time and energy from you. We anticipate that, in order to master the material, for every single class hour spent in class you will need to spend at least two hours outside of class to do homework and to review, practice, and prepare for class.

CLASSROOM POLICIES:
Tardiness is distracting to everyone, so be on time for class. Sleeping, note passing, chatting, text-messaging, and sudoku (etc.) is annoying and immature. Leaving early is similarly not acceptable. Turn off your phone. Consult with your instructors if you have problems with any of these policies. Further, because absence counts against you, attending class unprepared is better than not attending at all.

Check the on-line schedule regularly. It is definitive and you are responsible for its contents. Furthermore, you will have a quiz or text nearly every week. Please plan accordingly. There will be no make-ups for quizzes or exams.

Please note: Attendance will be taken regularly. "Prepare for class" meets precisely that: you are to have prepared the exercises for class so that we can review them efficiently. Your preparation will be reflected in the classroom preparation grade.

Please bring the workbook to class with you. We will be using it in class.

If you need special accommodation due to medical conditions, please see me early in the semester.

Excused absences will be granted only for the reasons listed in the Student Rights and Responsibilities code (section 5.2.4.2). The code can be found on-line at: http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Code/part2.htm. For excused absences, you will be given an opportunity to earn participation credit for the missed class(es). Each unexcused absence results in final grade being reduced by 1%.
