graduate program: Plan of Study
Admission | Teaching | Stipends | Plan of Study | The Exam | Reading List
All students are required to complete the following for the Master's degree in German:
  • 30 hours of graduate credit (plan B) or 24 hours of credit with the presentation of a Master's thesis (plan A), both plans with at least 24 graduate credits in German;
  • reading knowledge of a second foreign language; this requirement can be fulfilled by one of the methods given in the Graduate School Bulletin.
  • a comprehensive written and oral examination.

It is strongly recommended that graduate students pass the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung of the Goethe Institute in their first year of study. The Goethe Institute examinations are usually given on the UK campus each year in March or April.

Students will be required to complete at least 24 hours of course work in the department. The GER 653 course required of teaching assistants and courses taken to fulfill the second foreign language requirement do not count towards the completion of the 30 (plan B) or 24 (plan A) hours of graduate course work.

At least half of students' course work has to be at the 600 level or above, and 24 hours have to be in courses with the German course prefix. Students are required to take at least one German course during each semester they are enrolled in the German graduate program.

Each semester students select from available courses in consultation with the graduate studies advisor.

For a complete list of courses offered by the Department see the UK Graduate School Bulletin.
