The Chinese program at the University of Kentucky is dedicated to the study of the Chinese-speaking world, including but not limited to Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Chinese-speaking Southeast Asia, and the Chinese Diaspora all over the world. In short, we are interested in studying one quarter of humanity. In the past, Chinese culture has been one of the greatest civilizations of human history. Today, it is a vital presence in our increasingly globalizing world.
The Chinese program at the University of Kentucky will offer a full sequence of Chinese language courses, introduction to Chinese culture from pre-modern to contemporary times, as well as courses in Chinese linguistics, Chinese cinema, Chinese popular culture, Chinese visual culture, gender politics in Chinese literature, and Chinese urban studies. Interested students have the opportunity to take China-related courses in an interdisciplinary environment with faculty working in such diverse programs as accountancy, art history, curriculum and instruction, community and leadership development, education, gender and women's studies, geography, history, landscape architecture, law, library science, linguistics, mining engineering, music, philosophy, and theater.
The Chinese program at the University of Kentucky will prepare students with a solid foundation and a broad perspective to be active players in the globalizing twenty-first century, as it is no exaggeration to expect the Chinese-speaking world to play an even greater role in the word-wide accelerations of economic, cultural, and political changes in the years to come. Students with a sound knowledge of Chinese language and culture can engage in careers including but not limited to communications, education, entertainment, international trade and finance, international relations, as well as pursuing further education in such broad fields as business, history, international relations, language, law, and medicine.
