Exercise 5

Predator-Prey Coevolution

Sennius cruentatus is a beetle which lays its eggs on the plant Chamaecrista nictitans. The larvae burrow into the fruit of this plant and consume the seeds.

A. Define coevolution using this example.

B.  Using your understanding of the sequences of steps that occur during a predation event, speculate about how selection induced by the beetle might shape the traits of the plant. Discuss the potential costs of any anti-beetle responses you think the plant could evolve at each step. Use animal examples to illustrate your ideas.
