Russian Table

Come join us at the next Russian Table of the semester. Don't miss out! Eat, speak Russian, and have fun!

When:  Thursday, March 1 (Professor Rouhier-Willoughby will discuss Russian Travel Adventures) and March 29 (Gulnoro Mirzovafoeva will discuss life in the Pamyr Region of Tajikistan) from 4-5:30 p.m.

Where: Pazzo's Pizza (Limestone Ave.)

Russian Table is held every two weeks from September to April. All who are interested in Russian speaking (from beginners to natives), fellowship and good company are welcome to attend.

Cathy A. Frierson, University of New Hampshire, will present a talk entitled Narratives of Moral Servitude and 'Genetic Fear':  Oral History Interviews with Child Victims of Soviet Repression. This presentation is based on 25 interviews with children of so-called "enemies of the people." March 26 at 3:30 PM at the Niles Gallery in the Fine Arts Library, UK, free and open to the public.

Chekhov's Cherry Orchard at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival March 22-April 15. We plan to go to this as a group the weekend of April 14 and will make an anouncement about group tickets. For more information call (513) 381-2273.

Russian Week from April 6th-15th! Our culmination of the year's events.

Friday, April 6 from 3-5 p.m. WT Young Library Gallery, Professor Yelena Minyonok, Curator of the Folklore Archives, Russian Humanities University and Fulbright Scholar in MCL this semester, will present a lecture entitled Russian Village Expeditions: Collecting Witchcraft and Rituals. Information on her ongoing research in Russian villages may be found on the web: www.russianexpedition.net and russianexpedition.com. Professor Minyonok will show excerpts from rituals, songs, and other village practices from various regions of Russia. Refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public.

Monday, April 9 at 4 p.m. Niles Gallery in the Fine Arts Library, Professor Kenneth Slepyan, Transylvania University, will give a lecture entitled “Stalin’s Guerrillas: Soviet Partisans in World War II.“ Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, April 11 from 4-6 Gaines Center Bingham Davis House, Ukrainian Easter Egg decorating.

Thursday, April 12 from 4-5:30, Russian Table at Pazzo's, presentation by Eleanor Sutter, Senior US Foreign Service Officer (retired), specialist in national security and nuclear policy.

Saturday, April 14, Performance of Chekhov's Cherry Orchard in Cincinnati. Tickets 15 dollars each. Show time: 7:30 p.m. To reserve tickets, email Professor Rouhier-Willoughby.

Sunday, April 15, Pot-luck Russian Dinner at Professor Rouhier-Willoughby's house from 4-7. Featuring honors for graduating seniors and the annual book auction in support of the Russian Club.

2006-2007 T-shirts

The Russian Club is taking orders for this year's t-shirt until March 26. The design will feature Pushkin, with a quotation about the Russian language, and the Russian Club logo on the other reverse. The shirts will be light blue, long-sleeved--15 dollars each. There are still a few of last year's t-shirts still available. If you would like to buy one, please email Professor Rouhier-Willoughby at jrouhie@uky.edu. Shirts are 10 dollars each. Quantities and sizes are limited.
