In
Neuroscience
is a very diverse program ranging from whole animal behavior to ion
flow across channels in membranes. Therefore, the program contains a
diversity of courses that one can choose from for one's own interest.
A suggested degree plan has been devised to serve as a template to build
from. This particular template of a degree plan does cover the prerequisite
pre-med courses for most medical schools (UK),
other allied health programs
and graduate
programs in the areas of Neuroscience. Yes, the template suggests
a rigorous program for your benefit! Experience
in research within the field of neuroscience is a rewarding means of
learning what researchers do on a day-to-day bases. There are various
ways to obtain an undergraduate research experience. On can enroll in
Biology
395, Anatomy
and Neurobiology 395, Psychology
395 as well as contacting faculty directly about the possibilities
for Work Study Employment or Part Time Employment for positions that
might be open to undergraduates. On the Research Experience www page
is a list faculty members in various departments that have identified
themselves as a potential mentor for undergraduate students. The local chapter for the Society for Neuroscience (THE BLUEGRASS NEUROSCIENCE CHAPTER) welcomes undergraduates to join as members for $5. Please contact Dr. Steve Estus to obtain a membership form (sestus2@email.uky.edu). The chapter has a yearly meeting for high school, undergraduate and graduate students as well as staff to present a poster on their research findings. There also cash awards for the best presentations. Related
links is a list of various organizations and societies that undergraduates
students might find of interest. To make your major in this track rewarding
it is important to become involved and not just obtain a degree but
really immerse oneself in societies, meetings, courses and ones research. The various contacts for the Topic Studies and specifically the Neuroscience track as well as for updates to these www pages are listed on the Contact www page. |
